More remodeling in St-Martin ...

For some time we had wanted to refurbish our bathrooms and bedroom on the ground floor. However, to avoid digging up the floor twice, we needed to wait for the new village sewer system to become operational, which finally happened in Spring 2009  (just a few years late).

Originally our plans were more elaborate, but last year's flooding convinced us to keep things simple. Our house is the lowest point in the village, so the idea is to have little as possible downstairs that will be difficult/expensive to replace!

Here are a few before and after pictures:

LAUNDRY/TOILET ROOM.

Originally contained the old grubby shower, along with the toilet and washing machine.

Now this room has the washer, dryer and a utility sink. The toilet has moved to a different corner and is slightly screened off from the rest.

SHOWER/BATH ROOM.

Before, had just the tub, plus double sinks (only one really worked) and garish flowered tile decor.

The new shower, tub and a single sink now are all in the same place, and the plain white tile is much easier on the eyes.

BEDROOM.

The door used to open onto the bottom stair step, which was easy to trip over on your way in and out of the room.

We moved both the bed and the door to better positions. Repainting and adding some pictures didn't hurt either.

BEDROOM - Another View.

Most of the ground floor was covered in '70s-style brown tile, except for one patch of bare concrete.

The tile and the bare spot were re-covered here (and in all the rooms) with a lighter, more attractive linoleum.

In typical French fashion, it took longer than expected to get things done, but the work was finally completed just days before our first visitors arrived! Nevertheless, we're quite happy with the results.
